Biography

John Basl is an associate professor in the College of Social Sciences and Humanities at Northeastern University, based in Boston. He is associate director of the Northeastern Ethics Institute — where he serves as lead for AI and data ethics initiatives — and holds affiliate appointments with the Khoury College of Computer Sciences, the Institute for Experiential AI, and the Institute for Experiential Robotics. 

Basl is passionate about engaging with students and faculty about the philosophical and ethical issues presented by emerging technologies. He is fascinated by hard ethical puzzles with significant impacts and is curious to explore effective structures for managing ethical issues in computing, focusing especially on explainable AI tools and transparency in algorithmic systems.
